SMEC undertook an Environmental Impact Assessment to provide a basis for an Environmental Impact Statement and a supporting concept road design for Hutley Drive in Lennox Head, for the Ballina Shire Council. The project involved construction of a 2.5km two lane carriageway through an environmentally constrained area. To the west, the area is bound by the Ballina Nature Reserve and a coastal wetland, and to the east there are existing and proposed developments. Projected population increases in the area necessitated a more efficient road network between Lennox Head and Ballina. Paramics modelling proved Hutley Drive was the most preferred route for local traffic. SMEC’s services included: preliminary road design, delivery of the environmental impact statement, project management of sub-consultants, government agency liaison, advice during the community consultation and submission process and supplementary report.
