During the time of its construction from 2004 to 2008, EastLink was the largest civil construction project undertaken in Australia and is Victoria’s largest ever single road project.
The 39km tollway runs from Mitcham in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs to Frankston on the Mornington Peninsula, south-east of Melbourne. EastLink includes 90 bridges and 17 interchanges. However the defining feature of EastLink is the twin 1.6km tunnels (Mullum Mullum and Melba) which run underneath the environmentally sensitive Mullum Mullum valley near the Mitcham end of the tollway.
SMEC, as part of a joint venture with KBR was engaged by the EastLink project parties (ConnectEast and Thiess John Holland) to provide all Proof Engineering and Construction Verification for the project.
