The project is designed to help economic growth through improved infrastructure, procurement of necessary rolling stock and policy reforms.
As part of this strategy, the Asian Development Bank is financing priority investment projects to strengthen Bangladesh Railway’s core business activities. Specifically, these sub-projects will concentrate on improved capacity for the Dhaka-Chittagong and Bangladesh-India rail corridors where there is high demand for intercity passenger and freight services.
There are six selected sub-projects for preparation (Tongi-Bhairab Bazar, Dhaka-Laksam, Dhaka-Tongi, Ishurdi-Darsana, Khulna-Parbatipur and Bogra-Jamtoil), detailed design and documentation for double tracking and signal improvements on the Tongi-Bhairab Bazar route, and supervision of construction works. SMEC was engaged to provide implementation consulting services to assist Bangladesh Railway to implement the priority investment projects.
