SMEC to Design Water Treatment Plant in Malawi

SMEC has been engaged by Lilongwe Water Board to conduct a preliminary design of a proposed new Water Treatment Plant in Malawi.

SMEC has been engaged by Lilongwe Water Board to conduct a preliminary design of a proposed new Water Treatment Plant in Malawi.

Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) supplies water to the City of Lilongwe with water sourced from two reservoirs on the Lilongwe River; Kamuzu Dam I and Kamuzu Dam II. The dams have a combined storage capacity of 23.4 Mm3. Water from the dams is abstracted for treatment via three intakes at two existing treatment plants.

LWB intends to construct a third Water Treatment Plant to meet projected future demand. This Plant will provide a 50 million litres per day extension to the two existing treatment plants.

SMEC’s scope of work includes: soil investigation; treatment process evaluation; Environmental and Social Impact Assessments; initial cost estimates; economic and financial analysis; and preliminary designs.
