SMEC Supports Irrigation Rehabilitation Schemes in Ghana
This project will rehabilitate and modernise irrigation schemes, improving rice production in the region.
SMEC has been engaged by the Ghana Ministry of Food and Agriculture to prepare detailed designs and tender documentation for the rehabilitation of the Tono and Vea Irrigation Schemes in Ghana. The objective of the project is to rehabilitate and modernise each of the schemes (including irrigation and drainage systems) in order to improve water conveyance efficiency, technical operations and scheme management.
The Tono Scheme is located near Navrongo and has a potential irrigable area of 2,680 hectares. The Vea Scheme, located near Bolgatanga, has a potential irrigable area of 1,195 hectares. These irrigation schemes supply water to local communities for the production of rice, and play a vital role in the government’s strategy to increase local production and reduce the need for imported rice.
SMEC’s services will include: hydrological, topographic and geotechnical studies; Environmental and Social Impact Assessments; economic and financial analysis; and the preparation of operation and maintenance manuals.
Funded by the International Development Association (IDA) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), this project forms part of the larger Ghana Commercial Agriculture Project.
