Lesotho

SMEC has operated in Lesotho since 1994. SMEC's first project in Lesotho was the Organisation and Manpower Study for the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. The Lesotho Highlands Development Authority controls the water resources of the highlands of Lesotho by a series of extremely long tunnels and dams. SMEC was engaged to review the organisational requirements of the authority. SMEC opened a permanent office in Maseru in 1996.

Since then, SMEC’s projects in Lesotho have included a water catchment study in the highlands, detailed design, construction supervision and contract management for Mohale Dam, Environmental Impact Assessments and a feasibility assessment of a national road network. SMEC has experience in the Transport, Water, Environment and Social Development sectors in Lesotho.

SMEC is currently providing advisory services and implementation support to the Lesotho transport sector as part of the Integrated Transport Project (ITP). The objective of ITP is to contribute to economic growth and poverty reduction through improved road infrastructure and maintenance and institutional reforms. SMEC is preparing an Action Plan for the institutional reforms including working procedures and policies for the proposed Directorate and Local Authorities (which will be responsible for road administration) in the areas of institutional change, human resources, finance and road network management.
