SMEC has operated in Mongolia since 1998. SMEC’s first project in Mongolia was a health sector improvement project. The project involved assistance to the Mongolian Ministry of Health and the Social Welfare Department to restructure Mongolia’s health sector. SMEC opened a permanent office in Ulaanbaatar in 2010.
SMEC's projects in Mongolia have included road improvement projects, rail improvement projects, hydropower schemes and Environmental and Social Impact Assessments. SMEC has experience in the Transport, Geotechnics and Tunnels, Hydropower and Energy and Social Development sectors in Mongolia.
Most recently, SMEC has been involved in the Baruun Naran Coal Mine project. The mine is located in southern Mongolia, 22km southwest of Tavan Tolgoi. SMEC is preparing environmental and social impact assessment studies to meet Mongolian regulatory requirements and international Equator Principles and to enable operation of the open-cut mine.
