SMEC has operated in Papua New Guinea (PNG) since 1976. SMEC's first project in PNG was the Highlands Highway Project. The project established an intensive construction group to develop the capabilities of the Department of Transport, Works and Supply. The project also facilitated accelerated training of Department of Transport employees. SMEC opened a permanent office in Port Moresby in 1996.
Since then, SMEC has undertaken national roads and bridges maintenance projects, an airport maintenance project, the Lihir Gold Mine geothermal power project, capital works implementation in the health sector, design and construction supervision for a correctional services facility and development of a border trade program. SMEC has experience in the Transport, Hydropower and Energy and Social Development sectors in PNG.
SMEC is currently managing the AusAID (Australian Government Overseas Aid Program) funded Transport Sector Support Program. This is a long-term program which will maintain AusAID’s existing levels of investment in the transport infrastructure sector in PNG and is intended to encourage the PNG government to take increased responsibility for transport infrastructure maintenance funding.
