SMEC has operated in Samoa since 1972. SMEC's first project in Samoa was the AusAID funded Road Maintenance Training Project. SMEC supervised road maintenance units, workshop and field maintenance groups and provided on-the-job training in road maintenance and maintenance of plant and equipment.
Since then, SMEC has been involved in several key projects including transport sector reform and strengthening, feasibility studies for road rehabilitation and hydropower plants, the cyclone emergency recovery project and capability strengthening for the Samoan Customs Department management team. SMEC has experience in the Transport, Water, Hydropower and Energy and Social Development sectors in Samoa.
SMEC has recently been involved in the Afulilo Environmental Enhancement Project. The project involves technical assistance to address Samoa’s fuel price increases through development of renewable energy resources. The project will also increase the energy output of the Afulilo Hydropower plant.
