SMEC has operated in Kazakhstan since 1999. SMEC's first project in Kazakhstan was the Atyrau Pilot Water Supply and Sewerage Project. The objective of the project was to strengthen the capacity of the water supply company to provide safe drinking water and to dispose of sewage in a sustainable manner. SMEC provided construction supervision and institutional strengthening for the project. SMEC opened a permanent office in Almaty in 1999.
Since then, SMEC’s projects in Kazakhstan have included construction supervision of the Almaty-Gulshad road rehabilitation and the west Kazakhstan road network, an irrigation and drainage improvement project and due diligence reporting for a proposed hydropower and wind power facility.
With experience across the Transport, Water and Hydropower and Energy sectors in Kazakhstan, SMEC was recently engaged to improve rural water supply and reduce poverty in targeted rural areas. This was achieved through strengthening the capacity of local authorities in project implementation and management. SMEC designed and delivered training courses to local client staff.
