SMEC has operated in Tajikistan since 1999. SMEC's first project involved technical assistance to the Government of Tajikistan in the implementation of policies and institutional reforms to improve the Transport and Energy and Renewables sectors to meet the needs of a market economy.
Since then, SMEC has been involved in a number of road rehabilitation projects such as the Dushanbe-Krgyz Border road rehabilitation, hydropower project development strategies, power sector development and development of the national health sector.
SMEC has experience in the Transport, Water, Hydropower and Energy and Social Development sectors in Tajikistan. Most recently, SMEC has been involved in the Regional Power Transmission Interconnection Project. The objective of this project is to export surplus power generated in Tajikistan to Afghanistan via an interconnection between the two country’s power grids. This is to be implemented under separate components for each country.
