United Arab Emirates

SMEC has operated in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) since 1998. SMEC's first project involved design services for water distribution networks throughout Abu Dhabi. SMEC's first office in the UAE was opened in Dubai in 1999. An office was established in Abu Dhabi in 2003 and this became the regional headquarters for SMEC’s Middle East and North Africa division in 2008.

SMEC’s projects in the UAE have included client representative services for the developer of a luxury residential project in Abu Dhabi, operation and maintenance advice for the water and wastewater networks on the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai, establishment and operation of a waste management centre for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, regulatory services for the municipalities in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and a number of freeway rehabilitation projects.

SMEC has experience in the Transport, Water, Environment, Urban Development and Government and Advisory Services sectors in the United Arab Emirates. Most recently, SMEC has been engaged by the Department of Municipal Affairs to develop by-laws and regulations for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, taking into account key social, economic, environmental, religious, cultural and geographic considerations.
