SMEC’s expertise in energy and renewables projects is derived from the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme, a remarkable renewables project which saw the development of over 3,500MW of hydropower and supporting infrastructure including Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and communications systems, and connection assets such as transmission lines and substations.
Since the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme, SMEC has worked on a range of other hydroelectric schemes, and in geothermal, gas generation (open and combined cycle), solar photovoltaic and thermal, wind, biomass and biofuel projects. SMEC’s expertise includes feasibility studies, resource studies, conceptual and detailed design, procurement and construction management. SMEC is also implementing cutting-edge projects such as solar thermal projects with storage technology. SMEC can provide geotechnical, structural, mechanical, electrical, controls and high-voltage capability including transmission lines, distribution networks and substations.
In the Oil and Gas and Industrial sectors, SMEC has expertise in Front End Engineering Design (FEED), conceptual and detailed design and Engineering Procurement Construction Management (EPCM) for field development, refineries and biofuel process plants. In the Water and Transport sectors, SMEC has expertise in SCADA, intelligent control systems and mechanical and electrical plant engineering.
Capabilities
Within the Energy and Renewables sector, SMEC’s capabilities extend through all stages of the project from conception to commercial operation and subsequent assessment and refurbishment. Projects in this sector are by nature multi-disciplinary, and this makes SMEC the ideal choice of partner. Whether the project is in the private or public sector, small or large, cutting-edge renewable or traditional generation, localised gas processing or dispersed transmission project, SMEC provides first class cost effective solutions.
