SMEC has established an enviable record for providing engineering services for underground works and tunnels in the water supply, irrigation, transport, underground storage and power generation sectors. SMEC has access to a wealth of knowledge and experience, including the capabilities of the Company's geotechnical and structural design groups.
SMEC keeps abreast of the latest technologies and industry innovations, including: tunnel boring machine excavation, shielded soft ground tunnel systems, large mining machines (roadheaders), pipe jacking and shaft raise boring or sinking. SMEC’s experience and understanding of conventional methods of excavation and support for modern and developing tunnelling techniques ensures the Company provides the most appropriate technical input for every project.
SMEC has been involved in some of the world’s most significant tunnels projects. These include the SMART Tunnel project in Malaysia (a tunnel used for flood water transfer and road transport) and the Rohtang Tunnel project in India (a road tunnel located at an elevation of 3,500m in the Himalayas).
