SMEC’s presence in the Pacific is set to increase with a landmark contract signed this month with NZAID. This new contract has already provided SMEC with a new project in Kiribati; the Kiribati ‘Sustainable Towns Program'.
This program will contribute to a larger program of urban renewal by undertaking a detailed site investigation and preliminary environmental impact assessment of reclaimed state land known as ‘Temaiku’. Upon completion of this significant project, the Government of Kiribati will be able to make informed decisions about the development of land use for Temaiku (one of the few pieces of vacant land available for development, in Kiribati). Kiribati is primarily made up of coral atolls and small islands and is highly susceptible to the effects of climate change. 23 October 2009
