Axle Load Control and Weighbridge Stations


Our Role

SMEC has been appointed by the Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RTDA) to complete a Detailed Technical Study of existing weighbridge stations in Rwanda. The project will be completed in two phases.

In Phase 1, SMEC will provide:

  • A detailed study of management policy for weighbridge stations and existing bridge conditions
  • Proposal of new locations for stations
  • Technical specifications for new weighbridges
  • Preparation of procurement tender documents
  • Assistance in tender evaluation and contract negotiation
  • Inspection and testing of new weighbridges
  • Installation supervision
  • Pre-commissioning inspection and monitoring of axle load control
  • Training for weighbridge operation and maintenance

In Phase 2, SMEC’s services will include:

  • Inspection and testing of new weighbridges
  • Installation supervision
  • Pre-commissioning inspection and monitoring of axle load control
  • Training for weighbridge operation and maintenance.

Project Overview

Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV) overloading across the Rwanda road network has been a matter of concern for a long time, with overloading leading to rapid deterioration of road pavements.

The Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RTDA) engaged SMEC to complete a Detailed Technical Study of existing weighbridge stations in Rwanda.

The objective of this Government funded study is to prevent deterioration of road pavements caused by vehicle overloading, thereby reducing substantial maintenance costs to the RTDA.

The study will establish the effectiveness of existing axle load controls and identify new locations for weighbridge stations.
