Mai Po Nature Reserve Infrastructure Upgrade

Our Role

SMEC was engaged to deliver the EIA for WWF Hong Kong.

The EIA focused on key issues related to adverse ecological impacts to MPNR and the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay Ramsar Site during the works.

Project Overview

This project comprises a three year infrastructure upgrade carried out within Mai Po Nature Reserve (MPNR).

Key elements of the upgrade include:

  • Refurbishment of the education centre
  • Widening of the existing footpath and possible construction of a new footpath
  • Expansion of an existing tower hide
  • Construction of new bird-watching hides

The upgrade comprises a number of elements classified as Designated Projects (DPs) under the Environmental Impact Assessment Ordinance (EIAO) due to the works being carried out within MPNR. MPNR is a site of specific scientific interest and part of an internationally-recognised Ramsar-designated wetland of global significance.

As the works are carried out within this area of environmental significance, an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) focused predominantly on ecological impacts of the proposed upgrade.
