SMEC was appointed by the joint venture of Habtoor Leighton Contracting Qatar and Al Jaber Engineering to provide independent design verification services for structural and geotechnical works on Contract 3.
SMEC will provide independent design review and verification of:
- Main overbridges and underpasses
- Ramp flyover structures
- Pipeline protection structures
- Drainage culverts
- Geotechnical works including foundations, earthworks design and soft ground treatment
This project involves construction of a north-south expressway that bypasses Doha City in order to improve connectivity between Dukhan, Mesaieed Industrial City and Ras Laffan Industrial City.
The New Orbital Highway will include dual carriageways and dedicated truck lanes to accommodate up to 1,500 heavy goods vehicles and 8,000 light vehicles per hour (in each direction), significantly reducing traffic volumes and congestion in Doha City.
Contract 3 comprises a 56 km highway connecting the Mesaieed Industrial Area and New Port Projects to Salwa Road.
Project scope of work includes five grade-separated main interchanges (each with main and ramp bridges), 18 truck underpasses and 19 pedestrian and bicycle underpasses.
