Shrinagar Hydroelectric Project


OUR Role

SMEC provided consulting services over a seven year period which comprised:

  • Tender design for all civil and hydro-mechanical works, including a review of hydrology, geology, hydraulic design, finalising the project layout and project components
  • Study of various project alternatives and component designs
  • Detailed engineering design of the civil works comprising the concrete gravity dam, headrace tunnel, desilting basin, power channel, forebay, bypass arrangement, penstocks, powerhouse and tailrace tunnel
  • Preparation of tender documents.

Our Role

Project Overview

The Alaknanda hydroelectric power plant is located near Gaurshali Village, 10km from Shrinagar District of Uttarakhand. The run-of-river hydro project is expected to reduce the northern grid's dependence on fossil fuel to produce power.

The project comprises a 98 m-tall concrete gravity diversion dam. The water conductor system comprises:

  • two number 9.5 m diameter circular tunnels (1,013 m and 1,145 m in length)
  • two 240 m long open desilting basins to remove silt particles of over 0.2 mm in size
  • a 3,050 m long trapezoidal concrete lined power channel
  • 380 m long forebay channel and four number 5.8m diameter steel penstocks.

Four 82.5 MW (total 330 MW) Francis turbine units operate under net head of 66 m and design discharge of
560 m³/s. The powerhouse is surface type and the tail-race system is a 140 m long open channel.

The project is estimated to generate 1,302 GWh of energy in a 90% dependable year.
