In June 2012, Vela VKE (a professional consulting engineering company) joined the SMEC Group. SMEC, via the addition of Vela VKE, is well-established in the Namibian Transport sector, particularly in the area of roads and highways. SMEC's Transport sector services include conceptual planning, design, project and construction management and site supervision.
In south-west Namibia, SMEC provided services to upgrade Main Road 118 (between Aus and Rosh Pinah) to bituminous standard. This was the first phase of a project to link Oranjemund to the national road system. SMEC undertook economic evaluation of 1,540km of alternative road alignments and detailed design.
SMEC played a major role in the award winning Zambezi River Bridge. Located over the largest river in Southern Africa, the 19 span Zambezi River Bridge was constructed using the Incremental Launching method (successive sliding of completed, stressed together segments over piers until the completed deck reaches its final position). SMEC identified a suitable remote site, undertook feasibility studies and produced the final design and tender documentation for the bridge.
SMEC aligns local knowledge with global expertise to address the needs of its diverse client base, and has delivered thousands of projects in more than 100 countries, including Namibia.
We draw on the skills and experience from across the Surbana Jurong Group to offer enhanced capabilities and reach, delivering a complete value chain of services across Urban Development, Infrastructure and Management Services.
