SMEC South Africa has recently directed vital support to The Sozo Foundation, a non-profit organisation situated in the impoverished Cape Flats community of Vrygrond, Cape Town. This financial contribution underscores SMEC's commitment to catalysing positive change in underserved communities.

The Sozo Foundation operates with a compelling vision: to see the community of Vrygrond living with dignity, purpose and hope. Their holistic approach concentrates on the four key areas of education, skills development, social enterprise and entrepreneurship, with the overarching goal of fostering employability among the youth while providing constructive engagement.

Sozo’s philosophy revolves around the belief that keeping youth occupied and off the streets is crucial for their growth and well-being. The foundation tailors a diverse range of opportunities for youth at various stages of life, recognising that each individual’s developmental journey is unique.

Education is at the forefront of Sozo’s initiatives, aiming to equip and elevate the leaders of tomorrow by breaking the cycle of poverty and preparing individuals for further study and future employment. Skills Development is pivotal, offering NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) youth opportunities to acquire vocational and job readiness skills, empowering them for employment and sustainable income generation.

Entrepreneurship is fostered through mentorship, supporting youth-owned micro-businesses, while the Enterprise focus engages youth in advanced skills training internships and on-the-job training through social enterprises. Sozo’s current social enterprise projects include Dancing Goat Roastery (barista skills) and Kingdom Builders (construction). Other projects include hairdressing, barista, accredited coding, cosmetology and baking skills training schools.
