SMEC recently collaborated with the Tropical Rainforest Conservation and Research Centre (TRCRC) for a tree planting event at the Elmina Rainforest Knowledge Centre in Selangor, Malaysia. Attended by 28 employees, the initiative aimed to support rainforest conservation, aligning with SMEC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) priorities, specifically focusing on sustainability.

The day began with a hands-on session led by TRCRC, focusing on practical aspects of nursery management. Participants engaged in tasks like mulching, soil mixing, polybag filling, and tree transplantation, contributing to the successful planting of 40 Hopea Odorata plants (locally known as Merawan Siput Jantan). Mulching was demonstrated to conserve moisture and enhance soil fertility, while soil mixing ensured optimal growing conditions. Polybag filling emphasised the importance of proper container preparation for seedling cultivation. The session highlighted tree transplantation skills crucial for relocating trees to designated planting sites. This hands-on experience equipped participants with practical skills for effective forest management and environmental conservation efforts.

A group discussion provided an opportunity for participants to share how the activity aligned with SMEC’s CSR priorities. This exchange deepened awareness of the broader impact of SMEC’s sustainable initiatives on the communities and environments where the company operates.

Punitha Rajan Doraisamy, SMEC Regional Manager Malaysia, emphasized the initiative’’ significance, stating, “This tree planting activity reflects SMEC’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices. Our CSR priorities align with making a positive impact in the areas where we operate, and this engagement in rainforest conservation is a tangible expression of that commitment.”

Looking ahead, the SMEC team in Malaysia aspires to sustain such impactful initiatives, aiming to play an active role in broader rainforest conservation efforts across Southeast Asia and the Pacific. These activities serve to cultivate environmental awareness among employees, fostering a shared commitment to preserve and protect our surroundings.
