
2017 SMEC Award Winners
Each year the SMEC Awards recognise the achievements of our projects and our people and we are delighted to share with you the winners of each award.
On Thursday 14 December, the rooftop marquee of the Crown Towers, Melbourne, was the setting for the 2017 SMEC Awards. Each year the SMEC Awards recognise the achievements of our projects and our people and we are delighted to share with you the winners of each award:
Young Professional of the Year
One female and one male professional is recognised for their outstanding contribution to their role, to SMEC as an organisation and to the broader industry.
Mabo Makhubu, Section Manager-Advisory Services, is SMEC’s Young Professional Female for 2017. Based in SMEC’s Durban office, Mabo has been largely involved with socio-economic development projects, one being the Zibambele Poverty Alleviation Programme which provides sustainable work opportunities to predominately female headed households in South Africa. The technical expertise Mabo provides has led to the growth of SMEC’s social development service offering within KwaZulu Natal.
Zain Zaidi, Bridge Engineer/Design Manager, is SMEC’s Young Professional Male for 2017. Zain is based in SMEC’s Kuwait office. Since joining SMEC in Gurgaon, India in 2012, Zain was quickly recognised for his eagerness to learn, his hard work and technical capabilities and in 2015, he was appointed to Qatar, followed by a post in Kuwait as resident design manager.

SMEC Medal
The SMEC Medal is SMEC’s most prestigious annual award, and recognises an employee’s outstanding contribution to the Company.
Angus Macpherson, Director of Operations, is the winner of the 2017 SMEC Medal. Angus joined SMEC in 1994 and throughout his 23 years with the Company has been recognised as a respected colleague, a mentor, an advocate for his team and a senior leader who acts with honesty and integrity.

Project of the Year
One project from each of SMEC’s five geographic Divisions is recognised for technical or management excellence. The Project of the Year winners for each Division are:
ANZ Division: Sydney Metro Northwest -Surface Works, Viaducts & Civils
Africa Division: Oil & Gas Industrial Park Masterplan, Uganda
SAME Division: New Khanki Barrage, Pakistan
South East Asia Division: North South Commuter Rail, Philippines
Americas Division: Company-wide Business Transformation, Chile.
ANZ Innovation Award
This year we announced a special award which recognises innovation and technical excellence. During the year, we have seen notable advances in the application of smart thinking with emerging technologies across our projects, leading to added value and benefits for our clients.
The winner of the ANZ Innovation Award is Streamlining Hoddle Street, Melbourne.
