SMEC, Acciona and Hunter H2O have recently been awarded the Design and Construct contract by City of Gold Coast to deliver the Coombabah Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) Stage 6 Upgrade on the Gold Coast, Australia.

The Coombabah STP is the largest within the City of Gold Coast, processing approximately 50 per cent of the city’s sewage. This important upgrade is required to cater for the significant population growth expected in the catchment over the next ten years.

“Delivery of the Stage 6 Upgrade will ensure there is increased capacity of the sewerage network to meet the needs of the rapidly growing City of Gold Coast,” said Acciona Executive Regional Manager, Northern, Glenn McIlroy.

“Gold Coast locals are set to benefit from the project, with between 150-200 people expected to be employed during peak construction and a focus on delivering 75% of the total project value through engagement with local suppliers and subcontractors,” Glenn said.

The project includes the design and construction of a new preliminary treatment and odour control facility, new bioreactors and clarifiers, disinfection system, waste sludge thickening and dewatering facilities, in addition to site utilities, roadworks, drainage and landscaping.

“SMEC, Hunter H2O and Acciona are bringing together a strong core team of water infrastructure professionals who have extensive local knowledge of the Gold Coast sewerage network,” said SMEC’s Senior Project Manager, Ben Knight.

“This expertise has been brought to the fore to develop design innovations aimed at minimising plant shutdown durations and associated construction risks.”

David Bowerman, Hunter H20’s Executive Manager Electrical and SCADA Engineering agrees “Hunter H2O is pleased to be part of an outstanding team on such a large and high-profile project.”

“Our team of experienced engineers brings proven experience in brownfield treatment upgrades and hands on operations knowledge that will complement the capabilities of our partners, ensuring the best outcome for the Gold Coast.” said David.

SMEC and Hunter H2O will undertake detailed design of all structural, civil, mechanical and electrical works associated with the project and provide construction phase services as required.

Acciona is responsible for the overall construction management and commissioning activities for the Stage 6 Upgrade, including all site establishment, piling and ground improvements, civil earthworks, FRP, pipework, steelwork, building erection, pavements and asphalting, and ancillary works such as landscaping.

Construction has now commenced at the Coombabah STP and will continue until mid-2022, weather and construction conditions permitting.
