SMEC continues work to improve road safety on Denny Avenue Level Crossing Removal project

Having successfully completed the concept design on the METRONET Denny Avenue Level Crossing Removal Project in Perth, SMEC has been appointed to the detailed design by Downer EDI who are the Design and Construct (D&C) contractors. The project involves both rail and road components to remove the Denny Avenue rail level crossing and replace it with a rail-over-road underpass at Davis Road.

“We are pleased to continue our work on this vital project,” said Barry Wilson, SMEC’s Area Manager – Perth. “We’ll be able to apply our knowledge of the complexities of the site to the detailed design, and we’re looking forward to working with Dower EDI on the delivery”.

SMEC’s scope on the project includes the design of a rail, pedestrian and cycle bridge which will pass over Davis Road, road and intersection design, noise and vibration monitoring and geotechnical investigations.

“This project is a great opportunity for our diverse technical specialists to collaborate with a D&C partner to deliver a project from the ground up,” said Barry. “From geotechnical, drainage design, lighting, and landscaping to intelligent 3D BIM modelling of the design and construction, everyone is working together to achieve an optimal outcome.”

The current Denny Avenue level crossing has the reputation for being one of the most accident prone in Australia. The new design removes the interaction between vehicles, pedestrians and trains, improving community safety. Because of this the project is the first crossing removal to be undertaken as part of METRONET’s Level Crossing Removal program of works on the Armadale Rail Line in Perth’s south eastern suburbs.

The Western Australian Government has allocated $69 million to undertake the Denny Avenue level crossing removal and grade separation work, with the project contributing to urban renewal of Kelmscott town centre, improving connectivity and safety for the local community.
