The awarding of the Polihali Transfer Tunnel and Polihali Dam construction contracts by the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority in November and December 2022 serves as two of the biggest Phase ll contracts awarded to date and marks the beginning of the final stage of the water transfer infrastructure construction for the LHWP.
The Lesotho Highlands Water Project – Phase II, has made great progress in the 26 months since its inception. Excavation of the foundation and abutments, as well as grouting works at the Polihali dam site, is proceeding, while D&B operations are moving forward at the Polihali TBM access adit, lower intake, upper intake and gate shaft excavation. Significant amounts of D&B work have been accomplished.
Conventional D&B tunneling for the TBM access adit and Katse access adit is proceeding smoothly at the Katse site, with significant tunnel lengths already completed. Furthermore, the tunnel boring machine (TBM) at Katse has been assembled and in the process of being tested and commissioned. It will soon begin excavating toward the Polihali site direction.
