To bolster environmental stewardship, SMEC joined forces recently with the Center for Nature Conservation and Development (CCD) for a successful tree planting initiative in Vietnam. The activity, held at Me Linh Station for Biodiversity, located around 50km north of Hanoi, marked a significant step in SMEC’s commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability.

CCD is a national conservation non-government organisation (NGO) with over 20 years of expertise in biodiversity research and sustainable forest management. Its priorities include investigating and monitoring biodiversity, combating wildlife trafficking, and empowering local communities for sustainable development.

The heart of the tree planting initiative was the workshop, which brought together 15 SMEC employees and CCD representatives. Participants actively engaged in various tasks, from soil preparation to planting and tree maintenance. The immersive experience provided valuable insights into the challenges and strategies associated with sustainable forest management.

SMEC and CCD planted a total of 300 trees, including carefully selected species like Michelia tonkinensis, Chukrasia tabularis, Canarium album, and Erythrophleum fordii. This underscores the significance of the project in terms of its ecological impact, contributing to carbon dioxide absorption, improving watershed protection, and conserving threatened tree species.

Libby Paholski, Chairperson SEA & Pacific CSR Committee, expressed pride in SMEC contributing to CCD’s conservation efforts and conveyed eagerness for future collaborations in the pursuit of a sustainable future. “This tree planting initiative highlights the power of partnerships in addressing environmental challenges and paves the way for a greener and more sustainable future in Vietnam.”

This inaugural tree planting activity in Vietnam is part of a broader commitment by SMEC in Southeast Asia and the Pacific to actively engage in tree planting initiatives. It signifies the company’s proactive approach in addressing environmental challenges and contributing to biodiversity conservation across the region.
