SMEC obtained the Environmental Permit for the project and is working on the gazettal for the burial of the cable in Hong Kong waters.
As avoiding coral damage was key to obtaining the Permit, SMEC adopted a horizontal directional drilling technique to construct a cable duct below the main coral reefs, rising 300 m from shore to avoid coral damage.
AAE-1 will deploy 100 Gbps technology and upon completion will provide additional protection and diversity to the existing heavily congested cable systems.
The Asia Africa Europe-1 (AAE-1) is a 25,000 km long submarine telecommunications cable connecting Asia to Africa and Europe via the Middle East.
In Hong Kong, the AAE-1 cable runs over 27 km, the majority of which will be buried 5 m deep in soft marine muds through the use of a cable laying barge.
An Environmental Permit was required prior to commencing of the works.
