Located 6 km north of Sydney’s CBD, Crows Nest Station is an underground station in a fast growing commercial and residential precinct. The Sydney Metro project aims to enable the long-term growth of Sydney’s rail network, by providing improved travel times, infrastructure reliability and integration with other transport options including bus and cycling networks for its commuters.
Delivering sustainable and resilient infrastructure was a vital aspect of the engineering design. The design incorporated mitigation measures to address key climate change risks, ranging from increases in extreme rainfall events, extreme heat, severe storm events through to flooding, solar radiation and changes in soil moisture. Through innovative engineering the project team were able to develop a design which minimises materials consumption and waste generation during construction, achieving:
- 37% reduction in annual energy consumption
- 21% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
- 53% reduction in potable water consumption
As part of developing sustainable infrastructure, Crows Nest Station incorporated active transport facilities to promote a sustainable way of life and support the health and wellbeing for commuters and increase the liveability of the area. The station precinct offers integrated secure indoor and outdoor bike storage and end of trip amenities including shower and locker spaces.
By challenging conventional practices and using innovative techniques and technology, the team were able to deliver a design that is not only sustainable but also delivers construction cost savings and improved commuter experience.
As a minimum, Crows Nest Station was required to achieve 5 Star Green Star rating certified by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA), but in October 2020 was awarded a 6 Star design rating.
SMEC was the lead consultant on the Crows Nest Design Consortium (CNDC), in partnership with Woods Bagot, Robert Bird Group, Norman Disney Young (NDY), and Oculus, to provide design and technical services for the new Crows Nest Station in Sydney, Australia for Sydney Metro City and Southwest project.
CNDC was the service provider for the delivery of Design Stage 2 and Design Stage 3 for the Crows Nest Station Works and completed Design Stage 1 for the Crows Nest Station primary structures.
