Engineering for Agripower Silica Fertiliser Plant


Sustainable solutions for agriculture

Our client Agripower Australia Limited produces high quality silicon fertiliser products which are an important component of productive agricultural systems. To meet growing demand for silicon fertiliser worldwide, Agripower invested in a new $55 million amorphous silica processing plant at Charters Towers, North Queensland.

Our Role

SMEC provided electrical, instrument and control system engineering across the full project lifecycle, including commissioning.

The project scope included

  • Completing electrical design for the high and low voltage systems, including motor control centres and reticulation
  • Completing plant instrumental and plant system design
  • Providing engineering support for the construction phase
  • Providing on-site engineering resources as part of an owner/constructor integrated plant commissioning team
  • To provide a comprehensive engineering solution, our teams integrated multiple process plant equipment packages that were supplied by international and national vendors. We closely collaborated with our clients, other consultants and vendors to provide a fit for purpose deLectrsign outcome. Our strong network of regional offices in Northern Australia meant that 90% of the engineering work was delivered from SMEC’s Townsville office, located close to Charters Towers.

    Outcomes

    The project was commissioned and began operating in October 2019, delivering a capacity of 200,000 tonnes per annum of high-quality silicon fertiliser to national and international markets. We are continuing our partnership with Agripower through ongoing technical support.
