SMEC has supported key improvements to the famous Jenolan Caves site, located in the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area in New South Wales, Australia.
The ancient Jenolan Caves are of national significance, embedded in the Gundungurra nation’s history and have been a source of wonder and information for many generations of Australians.
SMEC worked with the Jenolan Caves Reserves Trust to provide survey, geotechnical, civil and structural engineering services to facilitate upgrades to improve the Jenolan Caves site and introduce amenity upgrades which have modernised the facility and improved the experience for visitors.
Our teams from Paramatta, Wollongong, Newcastle and North Sydney worked together to deliver a complete survey of the area, slope stabilisation around the caves, geotechnical preparation for a board walk and new visitor centre, and the design of a two-storey carpark and a structural integrity review of a culvert undermining the site.
We offered a collaborative team of designers with a single point of contact to tackle the complicated project. Though a small job, the project required experienced engineers from a range of disciplines. Being a leader in multidisciplinary solutions, we were able to put together a team of technical specialists from across SMEC’s Urban Communities and Geotechnical sectors to carry out the works.
