Project Overview

The Government of Tanzania is implementing the Water Sector Development Program (2006-2025) which has among its objectives the development of a basin-wide Integrated Water Resources Management and Development (IWRMD) Plan for the Lake Nyasa Basin (also known as Lake Malawi Basin).

The IWRMD Plan will safeguard the basin’s water resources and establish a framework to improve the livelihood of people living in the basin. The Plan will also promote equitable, efficient, environmentally sound and socially sustainable water resources development.

Over 580 km in length, Lake Nyasa is the third largest freshwater lake in Africa, while Lake Nyasa Basin covers an area of over 165,100 km2.
