SMEC was engaged to provide design and construction management services on the project.
This project involved the design and construction of a new public transport facility, located in the Nomzamo township in the Western Cape of South Africa.
Residents of Nomzamo had to previously make do with an informal minibus-taxi rank with no services such as offices, toilets or weather protection.
The new facility was designed to accommodate mini-bus and taxi movements and took the comfort and safety of commuters into a consideration.
The fully integrated public transport facility incorporates both the community’s needs and environmental sustainability into its functionality and includes:
- Safe pedestrian areas protected from the weather
- Properly serviced trading kiosks
- Taxi wash bays
- A manager’s office, kitchen, meeting room, security office and toilet facilities; well outdoor seating
- An ablution block for commuters.
A Photo Voltaic (PV) system was used to provide adequate electricity supply for 100% of the administration buildings and ablution block in periods of high-sun.
