SMEC completed a feasibility study, environmental and social impact assessment, and tender documentation for the Northern Expressway Project.
A feasibility study was undertaken to determine a suitable road corridor to link the greater Colombo metropolitan area to the northern provinces, with an expressway link to Kandy and considerations for future development.
This high priority project involves the construction of a 100 km highway between Enderamulla and Galewela (the Northern Expressway), and a 32 km highway from Pothuhera to Galagedara (the Kandy Link). A further 50 km of expressway will be constructed at a later date.
The Northern Expressway was designed to promote economic growth in Sri Lanka’s northern regions, increase road safety for travellers and improve the efficiency and reliability of the national transport network.
