Sydney Metro North West Line, is the first completed stage of Sydney Metro, Australia’s largest public transport project. SMEC worked on two of the three main project stages – the Surface Viaducts & Civil Works, and the Operations, Trains & Systems.
Completed during 2019, Sydney Metro Northwest delivered over 36km of new metro rail and a new generation of fully automated trains to meet the transport demands of Sydney’s rapidly growing communities in the North West.
In its first year of operating, Australia’s first fully accessible railway has carried almost 20 million customers on more than 105,000 services, with a customer satisfaction rating of 96 per cent. The fleet of 22 driverless trains has travelled more than 3.8 million kilometres, or 93 times around the equator.
The design was recognised as the ‘Global Best Rail Project’ by Engineering News Record (ENR) in 2020.
SMEC was engaged in association with Mott MacDonald and KBR as the Design Joint Venture (DJV) for the Operations Trains & Systems (OTS) package. The DJV provided civil engineering, structural, mechanical, electrical and public utility services.
SMEC provided the civil engineering, structural, electrical and public utilities designs. Fast-track design works were undertaken over 24 months, using approximately 150 employees in five countries.
The OTS package included the design, construction and commissioning of rail infrastructure:
- 23 kilometres of new track and eight new elevated stations
- Civil, electrical, structural and services infrastructure
- Integration of 13 kilometres of existing railway track and five stations
- New maintenance and stabling yard for 22 trains
Through innovative and design solutions more than 90% of the main structures were built using precast concrete elements, a unique achievement. The precast solution resulted in minimal design changes during installation and allowed for standardisation in the construction methodology achieving cost and time savings.
Collaboration between structural engineers and architects on the sheer glazed canopies for the underground and open-cut stations exceeded sustainability targets by halving the amount of steelwork required for construction.
