Project OverviewThe EnergyConnect project is a 900km proposed electricity interconnector being delivered by TransGrid and ElectraNet. The project will deliver high-voltage electricity between the power grids of South Australia (starting at Robertstown) and NSW (finishing at Wagga Wagga), with connection to Red Cliffs in Victoria. EnergyConnect is a core component of the Integrated System Plan (ISP) developed by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) and will enable greater energy sharing between New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia.
SMEC’s Geotechnics team is working with TransGrid to deliver geotechnical investigation services for EnergyConnect. SMEC is undertaking desktop geotechnical and environmental studies as well as field investigations comprising borehole, Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) and Electrical Resistivity Testing (ERT) along the project alignment between Wagga Wagga and Balranald. Being on-the-ground, the SMEC team has been able to quickly respond to additional requests from TransGrid as the project develops while supporting other clients and projects in the region.
The terrain and geology vary significantly along the alignment and this required adjusting some of the investigation techniques proposed to suit the local conditions. Digital logging and digital field data acquisition worked seamlessly, enabling SMEC to provide TransGrid with weekly data packages of all results from the previous week.
