As part of the Ballina Bypass Alliance, SMEC delivered detail design services for roads, structures, pavements and geotechnical solutions and confirmed compliance with related technical, environmental and authority requirements.
The A$560 million Ballina Bypass project extends from the Bruxner Highway to Ross Lane, and is part of the Pacific Highway upgrade between Hexham and the Queensland border.
Project works included:
- Design and construction of 11.5 km of dual carriageway
- Three grade separated interchanges (Teven Road, Cumbalum and Ross Lane)
- A 2.5 km extension of the Bruxner Highway
- Realignment of the existing Pacific Highway
- 12 km of local roadworks
- 19 bridges including a balanced cantilever bridge, a number of significant cuttings, several culverts and various types of retaining structures.
In late 2011, the New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services (formerly the Roads and Traffic Authority) extended the scope of work and the Ballina Bypass Alliance carried out concept and detailed design for four bridges.
Two of the bridges required bulb-T girders due to geometric constraints and high skew positioning. Project challenges included construction over varying depths of soft soils requiring various ground treatment technologies, aggressive environments affecting durability, traffic staging and management, and minimising flooding impacts from the bypass construction.
