Successful Tender Design Win for SMEC and Fulton Hogan on Mount Ousley Interchange

SMEC worked with Fulton Hogan on the winning tender design and will continue our strong partnership of collective success on the New South Wales South Coast.

More than 50,000 motorists who travel through the base of Mount Ousley in New South Wales each day are a step closer to safer and more efficient journeys with the award of a major contract to SMEC’s partner, Fulton Hogan Construction.

The Mount Ousley interchange project will replace the existing intersection of the Princes Motorway and Mount Ousley Road. The new interchange will feature southbound heavy vehicle bypass lanes and safety ramps, a commuter carpark, and a shared path and vehicle overpass for improved access between Mount Ousley Road, M1 Princes Motorway and the University of Wollongong.

The new interchange is a crucial development for the Illawarra and the South Coast region, enhancing connectivity, safety, and efficiency for travellers and the freight industry now and into the future.

Early work will start in the coming months, including survey and geotechnical investigations, utility relocation and vegetation clearing. Detailed design is underway with major construction expected to start late 2024. The Mount Ousley interchange is expected to take four years to complete.

Through late 2022, SMEC worked with Fulton Hogan to develop an innovative tender design. In January 2024, Fulton Hogan was awarded the contract to complete the detailed design and build the interchange. This successful tender follows on from SMEC and Fulton Hogan’s record of success on the Princes Highway having previously delivered the Albion Park Rail bypass, Foxground and Berry bypass, and the Gerringong Upgrade.

The $390 million project is jointly funded by the Australian Government and the NSW Government.
