Mchinji/Mwami One Stop Border Post (OSBP) officially opened, Zambia
The Nacala transport corridor is located on the Great East Road (T4) in Zambia and the M12 in Malawi, connecting Zambia and Malawi to the port of Nacala in Mozambique. This vital trade route will now benefit from the ease of movement provided by the OSBP, as it has combined two stops of adjourning border controls into one.

New Khanki Barrage, Pakistan
The New Khanki Barrage replaced the Khanki Headworks, one of the oldest barrages in Pakistan. The Barrage is located at River Chenab. The old system also suffered from leakage through the shutter gates which impacted the irrigatable water supply. The client set out to replace the old headworks with a modern barrage with full control of flow regulation and flood protection. The replacement is among government’s long-term investment plan of rehabilitating and improving Punjab’s irrigation infrastructure.

Purari Critical Works Resettlement
Prior to our client developing an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for a major hydropower project on the Purari River, SMEC were engaged to prepare a Resettlement Strategy Study. Based on our comprehensive strategy, SMEC developed a clear and implementable high-level roadmap for resettlement, including an overview of the resettlement requirements and activities to be undertaken for this vital hydropower project to progress to the development of an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment.

The project team at SMEC worked with delivery partner Martin & East to form the turnkey operation, Vula Joint Venture (JV), to successfully deliver this important community development.

Vulnerability Assessment of Samoa Road Network
Approximately 70 percent of Samoa’s population lives within one km of the coast with critical infrastructure, (such as hospitals, schools, places of employment, tourist infrastructure, port facilities, power plants, airports, and roads) all located primarily in this coastal zone. Expected climate change effects such as the combination of rising sea levels and more intense tropical cyclones, will place these coastal assets and communities at even higher risk.

Iconic bridge renewal for community connectivity in Australia’s Capital
Construction of the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge occurred between 1961 and 1963 comprising twin parallel structures with three lanes in each direction. The Bridge was made of hollow box segments held together by post-tensioned steel cables to form a solid superstructure over its length. SMEC have assembled a strong team to work closely with the National Capital Authority on the design consultancy services for the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge renewal project.
