SMEC in Malawi
SMEC has operated in Malawi since 1980, and established a permanent office in Lilongwe in 2010. SMEC’s first project in Malawi was the Mpira Water Storage Dam. This project involved a feasibility study for a proposed rural water scheme to provide piped water to benefit approximately 150,000 people.
More recently, SMEC’s experience in Malawi has included the design and construction supervision services for the World Bank funded Infrastructure Services Project (Electricity Component); preparation of Independent Environmental Impact Assessment for the Upgraded Kamuzu Barrage at Liwonde; and feasibility studies and preliminary design for the Multi-Purpose Surface Raw Water Sources Development for Central and Southern Region Water Boards on behalf of the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Development.
