Chattogram Port handles more than 90 percent of Bangladesh’s international trade, making the Dhaka–Chattogram corridor one of the country’s most important economic and freight links.

As trade volumes, industrial activity, and urban population continue to grow, the performance of this corridor is increasingly critical to the efficient movement of goods between ports, manufacturing centres, inland markets and communities across Bangladesh.

In May 2026, Bangladesh Railway reached a significant milestone in strengthening this nationally important freight corridor with the signing of the consulting services for the Preparatory Facility for the Dhaka–Chattogram freight corridor Improvement project.

Working in a Joint Venture with Yooshin Engineering Corporation, Oriental Consultants Global Co., Ltd. and ACE Consultants Ltd., SMEC will support Bangladesh Railway in preparing future investments to improve rail freight connectivity between Chattogram Port, Bay Terminal and the Mirsharai Economic Zone.

SMEC and our Joint Venture partners bring multidisciplinary expertise across rail planning, freight corridor development, engineering and project preparation. Together, the team will support Bangladesh Railway in delivering a bankable feasibility study, assessing technical and environmental aspects, supporting procurement readiness to progress future investment in one of the country’s most strategically important rail corridors. This work aligns with broader development priorities supported by multilateral partners such as the Asian Development Bank, which has consistently identified the Dhaka–Chattogram corridor as a critical national trade route, handling a significant proportion of Bangladesh’s containerised freight and supporting economic growth through improved logistics efficiency, reduced transport costs, and enhanced regional connectivity.

The Preparatory Facility will help shape future improvements to the corridor, focusing on strengthening freight movement between Bangladesh’s key logistics gateways and industrial growth areas. This includes planning and technical preparation for improved rail access to Chattogram Port, Bay Terminal and the Mirsharai Economic Zone, supporting faster, more efficient and more sustainable movement of goods across the country. A key objective is to strengthen intermodal connectivity across the freight network, improving integration between ports, rail infrastructure, logistics hubs and industrial precincts to support more reliable end-to-end supply chains.

This milestone is about preparing the foundations for a stronger freight corridor between Bangladesh’s ports, economic zones and inland markets. By supporting Bangladesh Railway at this early stage, we are helping shape a rail network that can move goods more efficiently while supporting broader connectivity for people, communities and industry.

The project is also closely aligned with the wider development of the Bay Terminal, which is expected to increase Bangladesh’s global trade competitiveness, supporting connectivity with India, Bhutan, and Nepal. Enhancing rail freight connections to major port infrastructure will be important to unlocking these wider economic and logistics benefits across the national transport network.

While the project is freight-focused, its benefits extend beyond goods movement alone.  Strengthening rail freight corridor capability can help reduce pressure on major road routes, improve logistics reliability, support safer transport outcomes and free up capacity across the shared transport network used by both freight and passenger movement.

The milestone builds on SMEC’s long-standing involvement in region-shaping rail projects across Bangladesh. From the Dohazari–Cox’s Bazar rail corridor to Dual Gauge Double Line Between Joydebpur-Ishurdi Section project, SMEC has contributed to infrastructure that is forming a key backbone of Bangladesh’s modern transport system.

Across these projects, SMEC’s focus has remained consistent: supporting clients with practical engineering, robust project preparation and transport solutions that respond to rapid economic and population growth. The Dhaka–Chattogram freight corridor continues this, with a clear emphasis on improving the efficiency, reliability and resilience of freight movement between ports, economic zones and markets.

As the preparatory facility progresses, the Joint Venture will continue to work closely with Bangladesh Railway to support the development of a corridor that is central to national productivity, trade and long-term connectivity. By strengthening the planning foundations for future rail freight investment, the project will help Bangladesh move toward a more efficient, integrated and resilient transport network – supporting both the movement of goods and the communities that depend on it.
