Supporting the social and economic development of low-and middle-income countries continues to require integrated solutions that not only address social and economic disadvantage but support sustainable development for all.

Globally SMEC is supporting International Financial Institutions (IFIs) and partner governments to deliver projects to improve community access to essential social services and enable greater access to markets for local producers.
SMEC’s international development practice is focussed on implementing inclusive infrastructure projects in SMEC’s core sectors of Water, Transport, Renewable Energy and Urban Development. We support governments to develop quality infrastructure and implement asset management systems enhancing the ability of governments to provide essential services to their citizens. Building capacity and strengthening institutions charged with delivering infrastructure is also at the core of many of our projects, ensuring sustainable outcomes.
Increasingly addressing the impact of climate change is seen by IFIs and governments as a priority in the planning and constructing of infrastructure. SMEC’s expertise across the climate adaptation and resilience stream is being utilised to support action to limit the impacts of climate change.
SMEC provides its International Development clients with an integrated approach to infrastructure development from concept through to construction ensuring that stakeholders are engaged and that gender equity, the needs of people with disability and the impact on environment are full considered.

Creating Resilient communities in rural Vietnam
The Tonle Sap Poverty Reduction and Smallholder Development Project (TSSD) has supported over 650,000 households, enabling vulnerable farming communities in seven provinces to enhance agriculture techniques and access new technology, markets, and rural finance.
Green Infrastructure Development, Indonesia
In 2021, SMEC and JV partners CDM Smith were appointed by GIZ to prepare 18 Urban Infrastructure prefeasibility studies across the provinces of West Java, Central Java, East Java and Bali.
Strengthening South East Asian and Pacific Island societies
On Wednesday 17 November, Libby Paholski, Functional General Manager Social Development and Environment for South East Asia and Pacific, showcased SMEC’s social development expertise at the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) fifth annual aid supplier ‘Big Meet 2021’; which sold out pre-event and was held solely online for the first time. Exhibiting alongside 50 fellow suppliers, SMEC’s virtual trade booth detailed our specific experiences working with DFAT projects in South East Asia and the Pacific Islands.
