The Electricity Distribution Efficiency Improvement Project (EDEIP), funded by the World Bank, marks a significant step towards modernising the electricity distribution landscape in Pakistan, particularly for the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO). This initiative is designed to enhance operational efficiency and improve service delivery, ultimately benefiting consumers through a more reliable and effective electricity supply.

Project Goals and Components

At its core, EDEIP aims to strengthen HESCO’s electricity grid, ensuring that it can deliver quality power while minimising technical losses. The project is structured around three key components that work synergistically to achieve these goals.

The first component focuses on enhancing grid reliability. This involves the construction of two new grid stations and the rehabilitation of existing transmission lines, specifically using advanced High Temperature Low Sag (HTLS) conductors. By upgrading the infrastructure, HESCO will be better equipped to provide consistent electricity service to its consumers.

The second component emphasises the modernisation of operations. This includes implementing advanced management systems and deploying automated metering infrastructure. By leveraging technology and information systems, HESCO aims to streamline service delivery, making operations more efficient and responsive to consumer needs.

Finally, the third component is dedicated to capacity building within HESCO. This aspect of the project focuses on equipping staff with the necessary skills and resources to effectively manage and implement ongoing improvements to benefit the people of Pakistan.

Key Activities

To achieve these objectives, SMEC International Pty Ltd (an SJ Company) has been appointed by EDEIP to support a range of critical activities. Responsibilities will encompass preparing feasibility studies, designing tender documents, and ensuring compliance with environmental and social standards. We will also oversee project planning and implementation, ensuring that all activities align with established quality benchmarks and manage contracts from initiation through closure while also addressing environmental concerns and implementing occupational health and safety measures.

The EDEIP initiative represents a transformative investment in Pakistan’s electricity infrastructure. By focusing on modernisation, operational efficiency, and capacity building within HESCO, this project aims to create a more reliable electricity supply for consumers throughout the region. The involvement of SMEC will be crucial in navigating the complexities of project execution, ultimately paving the way for sustainable improvements in Pakistan’s energy sector. Through this concerted effort, HESCO is poised to enhance its service delivery significantly, fostering a brighter energy future for all stakeholders involved.
