The ENR Global Best Project Awards recognise outstanding achievements across the international engineering and construction industry, highlighting projects that demonstrate design innovation, technical excellence and strong community benefit.
Crows Nest Station was delivered for Sydney Metro through the Crows Nest Design Consortium, led by SMEC, with contributions from Robert Bird Group, Woods Bagot, NDY, Surface Design, Büro North and Oculus, with A W Edwards constructing the station.
About the project
Crows Nest Station was recognised for its clear design vision and the structural strategy that removed internal columns to create open, intuitive concourse and platform spaces within a tight urban footprint. Its architectural integration, customer-focused planning and high-quality detailing contributed to its selection as the leading rail project globally.
This station forms a key part of the Sydney Metro City and Southwest line and supports the delivery of reliable, high-capacity metro services for one of Sydney’s most active precincts. The project demonstrates how engineering excellence, integrated design and collaboration can simplify complexity while creating long-term value for the city and its communities.
A continued legacy in global rail excellence
This is the second time in recent years that a SMEC-designed Sydney Metro project has been recognised on the global stage. In 2018, the Sydney Metro Northwest Skytrain Bridge received ENR’s Global Best Rail Project and Global Best Project of the Year, acknowledging the pioneering curved cable-stayed rail bridge designed by SMEC.
The 2025 recognition for Crows Nest Station further reinforces SMEC’s leadership in complex rail and metro environments, supported by the depth of expertise across the wider SJ Group. Our teams continue to deliver some of the most significant transport programs in Australia and internationally, shaping safe, efficient and resilient rail networks for growing cities.
