The first stage, at the Birrarung Marr precinct, is currently under construction, with Symal and Wamarra delivering a major riverside upgrade. Appointed by the City of Melbourne and working alongside its technical review team, SMEC and RBG undertook a multidisciplinary design review of the Birrarung Marr construction package.
This role provides the City with an added layer of technical assurance, confirming that designs are robust, buildable and aligned with its vision and requirements. Our independent expertise covered civil, structural, geotechnical, flood and hydrology, environmental, ecology and accessibility. This included:
- Reviewing design documentation for technical quality, constructability and safety.
- Ensuring designs met the City’s sustainability, accessibility and community goals.
- Providing advice on flood resilience and slope stability.
- Supporting the smooth transition from design into construction.

We combine rigorous technical review with practical construction insights to help the City deliver a project that upholds high standards of safety and quality, while aligning with its sustainability and community goals.
Sustainability has been a core consideration for the project from the outset, with the strategy being led by our Surbana Jurong Group colleagues Atelier Ten. As part of the core design team led by Aspect Studios and Taylor Cullity Lethlean, Atelier Ten has developed a strategy to embed climate resilience, rewilding, and inclusive public realm principles into every stage, ensuring the Greenline will continue to set a high bar for environmental and social outcomes as it evolves.
