SMEC, part of the SJ Group, has been appointed as the Owner’s Engineer for the 60 MWac floating solar project at the Saguling hydropower dam reservoir in West Java, Indonesia. The project is being developed by PT Indo ACWA Tenaga Saguling and will be located on the existing Saguling reservoir.

The Saguling floating solar project supports Indonesia’s renewable energy development programme and aligns with the government’s objective of achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060. Floating solar technology allows for the generation of renewable electricity on water bodies, optimising the use of existing infrastructure and minimising land use conflicts. It can increase panel efficiency due to the cooling effect of water and may provide additional benefits such as reduced evaporation from reservoirs. SMEC’s approach includes environmental impact assessment and integration with battery energy storage systems to enhance grid stability and support continuous renewable energy supply.

In addition to the Saguling project, SMEC in Indonesia is involved in several other floating solar developments:

  • A large floating solar project in the Riau Islands
  • Multiple floating solar initiatives with one of large mining companies in South Sulawesi Province
  • A floating solar for a mining company In Central Kalimantan

SMEC’s appointment as Owner’s Engineer for the Saguling Floating Solar project reaffirms our commitment to delivering impactful solutions for Indonesia’s energy transition. By harnessing the potential of floating solar and hybrid systems, SMEC is helping Indonesia realise its vision for a cleaner, more resilient energy future—one project at a time.
