Collaboration for Project Excellence
The Binna Burra Road – Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements – Event 20A project and the Enhanced Condition Assessment Program project are both finalists for the Collaboration for Project Excellence award. The Binna Burra Road project delivered an exceptional collaborative outcome with partners McIlwain Civil Engineering and the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads following severe damage by a major fire event. The Enhanced Condition Assessment Program is one of the largest asset management programs in the industry, delivered in partnership with Jacobs for Urban Utilities.
Both projects demonstrate the collaboration between the project participants and the client, creating excellence, and we are pleased to share this nomination with our partners.

SMEC’s Team Leader in IV and Construction services, Rob Lee and Jenna Forbes, Manager Environment – Melbourne have been selected as finalists for the Future Leader Award. This award acknowledges a staff member under the age of 35, who has made a significant positive contribution and added value to their firm.

Client Service Award
SMEC’s efforts on the Water Infrastructure NSW – Communication and Stakeholder Engagement Support program, conducted by Alyse Phillips, Raveena Grover, and Skye Jamieson, has been recognised as a finalist for the Client Service Award. This award acknowledges outstanding client/stakeholder engagement and contribution to the completion of the project.
Design Innovation
SMEC developed an innovative design solution, combining prestressed and post-tensioned precast bridge elements into a hybrid structural system within Sydney Metro’s Crows Nest station configuration. The Design Innovation Award recognises the demonstration of outstanding innovative design in all aspects of the design process.

Superior in Sustainability
The Pacific Motorway M1 Varsity Lakes to Burleigh and Burleigh Interchange has been selected as a finalist for the Superiority Sustainability Award. The design incorporated innovative construction methods and reduced the project’s resource footprint, resulting in the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads gaining their first ‘Leading’ IS Design Rating. This award recognises the achievement of sustainable outcomes that exceed the expected expectations in the initial project application.

Our last finalist is ANZ Manager of People and Culture, Karen Quinlan. Karen has been recognised for the Champions of Change award. This award acknowledges a female professional who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and who is championing change in the workplace.

From building design to advisory services on major infrastructure, Consult Australia works across the country in shaping, creating, and sustaining the built and natural environment.
In March, members from SMEC South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal office teamed up with the PEACE (Personality Exploration and Career Exploration) Programme, a career guidance initiative aimed at guiding students through their high school journey. The programme, provided at no cost, aims to educate students on various career paths and equip them to make informed educational or vocational decisions.
In a recent infrastructure-focused gathering held in Jakarta Indonesia, Karen Atkinson, SMEC Executive Director Dams & Hydropower, led discussions in a workshop focusing on empowering women in leadership roles and integrating gender perspectives into infrastructure development.
SMEC’s technical specialists are presenting technical papers at this year’s Australasian Tunnelling Conference 2023 in Auckland, New Zealand.
Specialists from SMEC’s Power and Energy team will deliver presentations at the 2023 All-Energy Conference in Melbourne. The annual conference is delivered in collaboration with the Clean Energy Council and grants attendees access to the most recent technology, information, and trends pertinent to professionals in the renewable energy sector.
