It was an excellent evening at The Eveleigh in Sydney on Thursday, 23 March, where industry professionals came together to celebrate the best in the business at the Consult Australia Awards for Excellence Gala Dinner.

Esther Soon, alongside her FutureNet Business Leader Program teammates, were awarded the People’s Choice Award for their teams’ work on the ‘Along for the Ryde’ project.

The Consult Australia FutureNet Business Leader Program runs for six months each year, during which time a cohort of up to 20 young professionals work and learn together. They meet fortnightly for various leadership workshops, and in-between, they collaborate in groups on a joint project.

Esther enjoyed the experience, “Last year I had the great opportunity to be a part of Consult Australia’s FutureNet Business Leader Program. Through the program I got to meet an excellent group of future leaders in the built environment industry and heard from many experts on a wide range of topics such as government relations, the future of leadership, finance, and communication and presentation skills.”

“A major part of the program was the completion of a team project. We were to produce a high- level master plan for the redevelopment of Ryde Hospital in Sydney’s north-west. It was a challenging project that was well outside my industry experience so far. However, our hard work paid off as my team ‘Along for the Ryde’ won the People’s Choice Award! I’d like to thank the Roads and Highways Design team in Sydney for their continued support of my professional development, and of course, for their votes,” said Esther.

SMEC Australia’s Madeline Harty was thrilled to have received a Highly Commended accolade at the Consult Australia Award for Excellence in the Future Leader category. Since joining SMEC in 2017, Madeline has worked on a diverse range of major infrastructure projects in both flooding and drainage designer and discipline lead roles, all while undertaking extensive professional development and gaining several accreditations to refine her technical and leadership skills.

In addition to being an enthusiastic participant within SMEC, Madeline also prides herself on her contribution to the industry and her community outside of work. She has made a significant contribution in the floodplain management space through her involvement in the NSW Young Floodplain Managers the young professionals branch of Floodplain Management Australia.

Madeline said of receiving the commendation, “I was thrilled just to be shortlisted for the Consult Australia Future Leader award alongside so many other worthy nominees, so to receive the Highly Commended accolade is the icing on the cake. A massive thank you to SMEC, Min Kang and Bowen Hicks from our phenomenal Sydney Drainage and Flooding team, for supporting my nomination and providing me with countless opportunities to grow my technical expertise, leadership skills and support my industry involvement.”
