Richard Parsons, one of SMEC’s key leaders in Social Value and Engagement is presenting on ‘Equitable engagement - some insights from Social Impact Assessment’ at the National Community Engagement for Infrastructure Forum 2023 in Canberra.

The National Community Engagement for Infrastructure Forum is a not-for-profit event, addressing the needs and challenges specific to community engagement in infrastructure. The forum brings together practitioners and community engagement professionals to exchange and share knowledge and expertise on advancing community consultation in the infrastructure and natural resources space.

Equitable engagement – some insights from Social Impact Assessment

Community engagement for Social Impact Assessment (SIA) has a distinct purpose as research – it is a key mechanism used to collect relevant social data to ensure a targeted and rigorous assessment. At the same time, a core principle in Social Impact Assessment is equity. Richard will explore equitable processes in community engagement and the principles and practices that ensure fairness, justice, and inclusivity in involving community members in decision-making and problem-solving.

Case studies of successful (and not so successful) community engagement initiatives that have focused on creating opportunities for all individuals will be shared to show how these have helped inform Social Impact Assessment processes and create equitable outcomes.
