SMEC, Metis Energy, and PCL Constructions join forces for the Gunsynd Solar project

SMEC, Metis Energy (“Metis”), and PCL Construction (“PCL") join forces for the Gunsynd Solar project.

26 April 2024 – SMEC, the Owner’s Engineer of the Gunsynd Solar project, is proud to announce its collaboration with Metis and PCL, marking a significant milestone in Australia’s renewable energy sector.

As a member of Surbana Jurong, SMEC brings its extensive expertise to the Gunsynd Solar project, further solidifying its position as a leader in the renewables market. With a proven track record in the renewable sector across Australia, SMEC will continue to drive innovation and excellence throughout the project’s lifecycle.

Since 2022, SMEC has been instrumental in supporting Metis during the project’s tender development and evaluation and EPC contracting stages. Once construction commences, SMEC will continue to provide technical and design advice, and construction management services such as monitoring activities on-site, conducting comprehensive on-site construction and commissioning inspections to ensure quality standards are met.

Gunsynd Solar, located in Goondiwindi, Queensland, is set to generate up to 250 gigawatt hours of energy annually, significantly reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 150,000 tonnes per year. This project will have the capacity to power up to 32,000 households in Queensland, marking a significant step towards achieving renewable energy targets.

March 2023 saw Metis achieve financial close and issue the Notice to Proceed (NTP) to PCL for the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) works. With the commencement of construction imminent, the project is expected to create jobs for up to 100 individuals at its peak, stimulating the local and national economy while fostering opportunities for local businesses.

Full operational readiness for Gunsynd Solar is anticipated by late 2025, signalling a new era of sustainable energy production in Australia.
